What is the function of photography in our private life? How is photography as a medium influencing our memory, our behaviour and our perception?
The art-works of Lilly Lulay are a reflection on and works about the tools of photography.
In her presentation she illustrates, how her work has developed from small format collages to expansive installations, such as what is currently on view in the exhibition RECOMMENDED OLYMPUS FELLOWSHIP at the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt.
Questioning which social and technical settings photographs are produced, archived and observed in our private life is underlined throughout her work.
Collage and Trompe-l'œil effects, or the technique of cut-outs, are encountered frequently in Lulay’s productions.
Lilly Lulay, born in 1985 in Germany, lives in Brussels and Frankfurt. From 2008–2009 she studied at École des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux, France. In 2014 she completed her degree at Hochschule für Gestaltung, Offenbach. Solo exhibitions of her work have been on view in Berlin, Frankfurt, Kassel, Santiago de Chile and Bayonne.
In the series Unser Schreibzeug arbeitet mit an unseren Gedanken Lulay deals with how the functions and appearances of photography change though the use of smartphones. Photographs of interiors are overwritten with digital icons which are formed by lacelike patterns with laser cutter. The installation How to Get in Touch consists of multiple objects: prints on fabric, porcelain, crumpled paper and imprints on model clay.
