In this six-month master class, Ferhat Bouda will explore with the participants a fundamental question for anyone starting in photography: How do I find my subject, my theme – and, most importantly, how do I bring it to life?
A photographic theme is both personal and universal. On the one hand, it emerges from what is close to us: our family, friends, and everyday life. On the other hand, it is about recognizing a deeper meaning: Why do we take photographs? What do we want to express or convey through our images?
By photographing our surroundings, we learn to observe more closely. We discover how to tell stories – capturing both joyful and painful moments. In doing so, we preserve the essence of a moment, one that can reflect the present, the past, or even the future. This is precisely where Bouda’s photography is rooted: in an honest gaze at what moves us.
But how can this approach be transferred when we step beyond our familiar environment? How do we photograph in foreign countries, tell stories of other cultures and people – while remaining respectful and authentic? This workshop will focus on these questions, exploring how photography can serve as a bridge between our own perspective and the world.
Topics covered in this three-part workshop series
Ferhat Bouda (*1976) grew up in northern Algeria (Kabylia) and has been living as a freelance photographer in Frankfurt am Main since 2005. The Kabyles belong to various Berber tribes that share a common language. Growing up in the mountainous region, Bouda was introduced early on to the cultural movement of the Amazigh people (Berbers). As a teenager, he became actively engaged in advocating for the recognition of his native language, Kabyle.
As an adult, he left Algeria with the goal of studying film in France, saying, “so that one day my grandmother can watch films in her own language.” However, by chance, he picked up a camera, which sparked his passion for documentary photography. He later pursued photography studies in Paris.
Since 2014, Bouda has been a member of the VU’ Agency in Paris, through which he has photographed numerous international stories, publishing in various magazines and newspapers. His most significant photographic project documents the lives of Berbers and nomadic communities across North Africa and the Sahel region, with numerous exhibitions showcasing his work.
His photographs have been exhibited at the Visa pour L’Image photo festival in Perpignan, France, the Akademie der Künste in Berlin, and the Galerie SCAM in Paris, among others. In 2022, the Fotografie Forum Frankfurt dedicated a major solo exhibition to his work. Bouda has received several prestigious fellowships, including the Boulat Prize (France) in 2016, the Hessian Cultural Foundation Grant, and the Ellen Auerbach Scholarship of the Akademie der Künste in 2020.
