[Please note: This event is cancelled due to reasons of organisation!]
Lukas Birk will present on his multi-faceted work in East and Far East Asia.
The photographer, who has been doing archival work in countries with conflict backgrounds for many years, presents his projects, books and interactive archival portals. His research and books are primarily published locally, in the country of the event, and marketed there. With his work he wants to counter the cycle of still ongoing colonial information and knowledge politics. The lecture is a mixture of Lukas Birk's stories and experiences underpinned with pictures and film sequences.
The lecture will be held in German.
Lukas Birk works as a photographer, publisher and as a storyteller. He presents his multi-disciplinary work and research in the forms of film, books, online platforms and exhibitions. A large part of his work deals with archival material he collects on his travels. Lukas Birk develops his projects through long-term research, mostly in conflict regions that have little possibilities to archive their own culture. His narratives deal with alternative representations of history, often mixing fiction with fact. Lukas Birk initiated artist-in-residency-programmes in China and Indonesia such as the AustroSinoArtsProgram and the Sewon Art Space. He founded the research projects Afghan Box Camera Project and Myanmar Photo Archive. His publishing house Fraglich Publishing mainly publishes books on photographic history in conflict zones.
